How To Create Wonder
In todays blog, I am going to outline just a few ways I have managed to create wonder in my magic experiences. However, what works for me, may not necessarily work for you and I will tell you now…discover your strengths and embrace your personality. Let’s get started!
Your Persona
Marketing is a trial and error learning experience. When one is discovering their persona, their brand and their “character”, emphasize your appearance and presentation because believe it or not, everyone is judging you from the moment they lay eyes on you. The client who booked you paid for a temporary suspension of disbelief and you have to make every effort to deliver. One must look and behave the part so don’t skimp out on selling yourself as the key person of interest that you must be in order to create wonder.
Punctuation
The definition of punctuation is simply being on time. I recently commented on Luke Dancey’s All Things Magic youtube channel in which he had a segment called “being on time'“ where he went over some tips on managing punctuation. I dropped in my two cents and expressed my philosophy which is this: “…if you’re on time, you’re late!'“ Needless to say, Luke loved my philosophy so much, he titled his youtube video after my philosophy! Showing up early and sizing up your audience gives you an edge because it prevents paralysis by analysis. In other words, know your audience, that way you’re able to cater to your spectators the correct amount of wonder they need to believe in your magic.
Presentation
After you’re done setting up and ready to go through your set, it’s showtime! Your audience is primed and ready to accept having the most magical time they have ever had. Some folks may have never even seen a magician up-close and personally, so this is also an advantage, however it can also be a a little more work because you are now going to set the tone for how your virgin audience will see magic going forward…no pressure, lol! Ensure you are ready, because in the middle of your show is not the time to be self concious, one must fully embrace their character to set the tone for wonder to envelop everyone’s mind.
Weapons for Mass Disruption
Your arsenal of magic tricks should be just as powerful as how you are perceived. Make sure that whatever you bring to the table ensures that wonder is guaranteed. Of course, the tricks alone can not guarantee your audience will be in awe, your presentation should be razor sharp. “There’s more than one way to skin a cat” is an old cliché that rings true when speaking on this subject. It also bring to mind the movie “Wolf of Wallstreet” where Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Jordan Belfort is taught by Mathew McConaughey’s character to “sell me this pen!” it’s not the pen you’re selling, it’s the why and how it will make you feel after purchasing it. Be a wolf and sell that characterization of magic!
Final Thoughts
You’ve developed confidence, your punctuality and persona are on point, and your presentation and weapons of mass disruption are ready to melt minds. All you need now is the confidence to go out there and handle your spectators the way they were meant to be handled, by you! Now get out there and melt those minds!
